PE at St Giles


At St Giles we have shaped our PE curriculum to ensure it is fully inclusive to every child. Our aim is to deliver a fun quality curriculum that maximizes the physical development of every child and to ensure all pupils:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives.


We aim for a PE curriculum that inspires all children to be physically confident and excel in a wide variety of competitive sports and physical activities. Through well-planned, high quality PE teaching, both in the curriculum and as part of extra-curricular provision, we seek to ensure that all children show resilience, collaboration skills, demonstrate decision making, motivate others and embed key values, such as fairness and respect. Our teaching helps children to understand the importance of physical activity and we aim to influence their personal choices, helping them to lead healthy, active lives.


In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in PE, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school.

  • Staff use the REAL PE scheme which supports the development of children’s fundamental movement skills. Not only does this secure skills such as agility, balance and coordination, it promotes the growth of the whole child through six multi-abilities: personal, social, creative, cognitive, physical and health and fitness.
  • Staff provide suitable learning opportunities for all children, including those with SEND, and tasks are adapted accordingly. All children are given the opportunity to stretch themselves and are encouraged to independently choose the level of their learning, in relation to tiered outcomes and challenges.
  • Staff provide opportunities for all children to participate in extra-curricular sporting activities, as well as a variety of competitive sporting events.
  • Staff run a Change 4 life course which helps children learn about diet and how they can make positive decisions to lead healthier lives.
  • Participation in a netball and football league allows children to compete against schools. Children develop a sense of team spirit and learn key values, such as collaboration and communication.


Our curriculum and wider school sport opportunities aim to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at St Giles, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Pupil discussions about their learning
  • Governor monitoring with our sport link governor
  • Analysis of pupil participation in competitions and sporting events
  • Analysis of pupil participation in after school sports clubs
  • Analysis of baseline measurement fitness tests
  • Assessed reflection of standards achieved against the planned outcomes
  • Learning walks and reflective staff feedback

At St Giles, we strive to ensure that children are equipped with physical development and skills that enable them to be ready for the curriculum at Key Stage 3. We want children to have thoroughly enjoyed participating in competitive sports and feel confident to apply their skills in different contexts.
