French
"A different language is a different vision of life."
Federico Fellini
Modern Foreign Languages (French) at St Giles
We want children to thoroughly enjoy learning French, therefore encouraging them to undertake new life experiences now and in the future.
We aim to deliver a high-quality languages education, which should enable pupils to express their ideas and opinions, understand and respond in speech and writing and communicate for practical purposes. Language teaching should provide the foundation for further learning of languages and help our pupils develop a curiosity about, and a respect for, other people, places and culture.
The Curriculum
In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in French, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout Key Stage 2. Children at St Giles follow the Language Angels scheme of work which is based on National Curriculum entitlements, although this is also supplemented by other approaches.
Teaching provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language to lay the foundation for future language teaching. Pupils explore a more structured approach to understanding French grammar, whilst also learning through games, songs, stories and rhymes to make French enjoyable and fun!
