Art and Design at St Giles

At St Giles, we have designed our art and design curriculum to ensure it is inclusive of every child. Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for art.

We aim for a high quality curriculum which inspires curiosity and fascination about the world around them, encouraging our children to express this in a variety of forms and media. We draw on the styles of artists from a variety of eras, backgrounds and countries, including local and lesser known artists.

In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in art, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout school.

• Staff follow the knowledge and skills progression document to create and overview for the year.
• Units are covered on a two-year cycle.
• Relevant vocabulary is covered when appropriate and is revisited regularly.
• As much as possible, units link with the topic driver subjects- history, geography or science.
• Children are exposed to a variety of artists’ work and styles.
• Appropriate resources and materials are available and replenished regularly.
• Learning is adapted to ensure it is accessible for SEND pupils where possible.

Our art and design curriculum is well-thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress.

At St Giles, we strive to ensure that children are equipped with the knowledge and skills to support them within the KS3 curriculum and the ability to express themselves and their ideas through art.

We want to children to fully enjoy and appreciate art, encouraging them to explore and experiment with different forms of expression throughout their educational life and beyond.
